Nuts About: Bette Lammerding

At OneMarysville, we know that strong communities are full of people who care. Each week, we feature a resident who has given their time and talents to make Marysville the best community in Kansas.

Find out why we’re “nuts about” Bette Lammerding!

Bette has made service part of her everyday life. She gives with her hands, her time and her attention.

At Marysville Methodist Church, that service often shows up in one of her handmade baby quilts. For more than 10 years, Bette has made quilts for newborns in the church, giving families something personal from the very beginning.

She has also served the church through the Board of Trustees, Ad Council, Bible studies and Membership Care. She has helped with Soup Day, Vacation Bible School, funeral dinners and many other ministries of the church.

Bette has carried that same steady service into the community, including 20 years as Marysville’s municipal court judge. She was also a founding member of the Marysville Community Foundation, served on the Koester House Museum Foundation board of directors and the Marysville Country Club board and gave her time at the Food Pantry.

She mentors younger women in the workforce, listens well and takes interest in our youth. She stays active through Quilt Divas, Atheneum and her coffee club.

And even though she does not cook much, she makes a mean chicken salad.

Let’s hear from Bette about why she continues to give back to Marysville:

Tell us about one of your favorite ways to volunteer.

When I retired, there were so many groups looking for help. Over the years, I’ve volunteered for the Koester House Museum, the library and the hospital.

How would you describe your experience of giving back in a few words?

Challenging — in a good way!

What would you tell someone who wants to get more involved as a volunteer?

Start by making one or two connections in the community. Our churches are a great resource.

How long have you lived in Marysville? What is your favorite thing about living here?

We moved here in 1972. We had two little kids at the time; my kids liked Marysville and they still like to come back. My grandkids are always surprised when they visit and people walking by on the street say hello. It’s a friendly place full of good people.

Which of Marysville’s Black Squirrels on Parade is your favorite?
