“A Woman’s Place Is in the World” features the artwork, sewing and writing of Shirley Sump at the Lee Dam Center for Fine Art. The exhibition brings together paintings, handmade pieces and original writings that reflect Sump’s wide range of interests, from Kansas life and German villages to animals, culture and the places she encountered throughout her life.
Sump was a painter, seamstress and freelance writer whose curiosity shaped nearly everything she created. Much of the artwork in the exhibition dates from the 1970s and 1980s, alongside quilts, clothing, embroidered pieces and writings that offer a fuller look at a woman who never limited herself to one creative pursuit.
