Come to downtown Marysville on Thursday, June 11, for Longhorns on Broadway! Activities will take place from 3-7 p.m. in front of the Pony Express Barn and Museum, 106 S. Eighth St.
This unique event will celebrate ranching heritage, western culture and the region’s agricultural roots with live cattle, cowboy poetry, music and family activities.
The afternoon will begin at 2:45 p.m. when Texas Longhorn cattle are led down Broadway from the Marysville Public Library to the area west of the Pony Express Barn and Museum on South Eighth Street. The cattle will then be displayed throughout the event in a fenced enclosure.
Among the featured animals will be Casino, a gentle 5-year-old steer. Casino will be led on a rope outside the pen so children can sit on him for photos. The remaining cattle will stay inside the fenced enclosure.
The Longhorn cattle display will include four head of cattle, some with horn spans approaching 110 inches.
In addition to the cattle display, the western-themed event will feature roping dummies and lariats, a stagecoach display, free bottled water and samples of Texas Longhorn sliders.
Visitors can also explore the Pony Express Museum and learn more about Marysville’s role in the history of the Pony Express and westward expansion.
Cowboy poet Ron Wilson will present two different programs at 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. One presentation will focus on cattle drives. Wilson is a cowboy poet from the historic Lazy T Ranch near Manhattan, Kansas. He was proclaimed a “Poet Lariat” by former Kansas Gov. Bill Graves and is known for original, humorous, family-friendly poetry rooted in ranching, rural life and western heritage.
Live music will be provided from 5:30-7 p.m. by Derrick Doty, a Kansas musician and historian. Inspired by stories of his great-grandfather fiddling for barn and house dances, Doty began playing fiddle at age 13 and has spent nearly 30 years performing, dancing and teaching music.
Doty’s performance combines traditional American fiddle music, historic banjo styles and stories from Kansas history.
It’s a Sweet Treat Day Bakery food truck will be on site throughout the event.
Longhorns on Broadway will precede the Midwest Texas Longhorn Association’s annual sale, scheduled for Saturday, June 13, at the Marysville Livestock Commission sale barn northwest of Marysville.
The event is sponsored by the Midwest Texas Longhorn Association, Jim and Becky Rombeck and OneMarysville, with support from the Pony Express Barn and Museum.
