Just six miles south of Marysville, Alcove Spring is one of the most significant sites along the Oregon Trail — and a must-see for history lovers and nature seekers alike. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this 223-acre park was famously named by a member of the Donner Party in 1846 after high waters delayed their journey at the nearby Big Blue River crossing.
A short, easy trail leads to the namesake spring, where water cascades into a natural basin near the still-visible 1846 rock carvings. Visitors can explore over five miles of scenic hiking and biking trails that wind through native prairie, woodlands and dramatic views of the Blue River Valley.
Interpretive signs, historic wagon swales and the Sarah Keyes monument help tell the story of the emigrants who passed through this serene and powerful place.
Follow the highway signs to East River Road — history and beauty await.
